Micah Playing Drums..

So Micah has been asking for drums for a few months now. Every Sunday after church he plays Jamie's kit, and every time he's in my office he plays the electronic kit. It's one of those things I was thinking "that'd be cool to get him a cheap set soon." Then one day he was playing in my office and I noticed he was playing a pretty impressive beat, so I turned I started recording on my phone's video camera (hence the poor quality), picked up my octave mandolin and started playing a little Celtic line.

Funny enough, as you watch this little 30 second clip, you'll notice after 4 bars I switch to playing a higher melody line, and oddly, he switches to a different beat, playing on the cymbals. It was so bizarre! You'll even notice at the end of the next 4 bars he even makes an attempt at a drum fill.

Good stuff.

So last week I went online and found a brand new in the box electronic drum kit on craigslist for super cheap. Picked it up, put it together, and had it ready for him when he got up from his nap on his birthday.

We wanted to do the little "surprise" gift thing, so we said, "hey buddy, let's go up in your room real quick." So the three of us go up there, and as he goes in his room he sort of veers to the right toward his closet, but as his body veers to the right he glimpses the odd new addition to his room and his head is now slowly turning left as he continues walking straight. Pretty quickly he comes to a complete stop in his path toward the closet, squares up his body with the drums set, stares it down, and looks back at us, as if to say, "what are those doing here?"

We say, "buddy, what is it?" "A drum set." "Who's are they?" "I don't know!" "Buddy, I think they're yours!"

Big smile. He loves it.

Now I know what you're thinking, "poor Jobey, I'm sure he really was hoping Micah would be a musician, but instead he got a drummer." Well, I know you may think that, but I will support my son in whatever he is interested in. Even drums.

Nonetheless, you can probably be looking forward to some new video posts of some of our jam sessions soon.
